Curly girlies know that wearing our hair natural and air drying are concepts that sound breezier than they actually are. In my experience, not a single wash day has ever been followed by a carefree air dry sesh. All the effortlessly curly heads I know are shaped by… a lot of effort.

As a beauty writer, I have a meticulous hair routine. But no matter how precisely I perform it, things inevitably start to unravel when winter comes around. While cooler weather means a break from that pesky summertime frizz, it also translates to parched strands that have been dried out by central heating and made even crispier by low humidity. And since I hate having my hair weighed down by heavy products, I usually just power through from November to March, accepting less-than-ideal hair days as just part of the process.

Well, all that changed when I got the chance to try the Delta® VersaCurl™ Detangling Shower Tool.

VersaCurl™ is a handheld shower head attachment that’s specially designed for curly and coily hair. And because no two hair types are exactly the same, the tool is super customizable with three unique silicone brush inserts to help prevent breakage and provide even gentler detangling. You can even detangle while the water is rinsing out shampoo and conditioner, which is a huge game changer (more on that later).

VersaCurl™ also has a pause feature: When you’re in between steps (like after you apply conditioner but before it’s time to rinse it out), the water flow can be stopped without having to turn the shower off. The best part? It holds the temperature steady while it’s on pause, so you’re never shocked by that stream of cold water when you turn it back on.

The verdict? I found it way easier to detangle with VersaCurl™ than with my tried-and-true wide-toothed comb (which tends to slip and slide when my hair is laden with conditioner), and the tool quickly became the first (and most crucial) step in my new-and-improved winter wash day routine.

Keep scrolling for my foolproof tips for happy, healthy hair, even when the days are short and temps are frigid.
