When your partner refuses to speak, look at you, or acknowledge your existence, they are not avoiding conflict. They are winning it.
You try to talk about something important. Your partner stares past you as if you are not there. You ask a question. They do not respond. You repeat yourself. They turn away. You stand in front of them, waiting for any sign of acknowledgement. Nothing.
This is stonewalling. It is one of the most effective and most damaging tactics in the narcissist’s arsenal.
What Stonewalling Actually Is
Stonewalling is a refusal to participate in communication or connection. In its simplest form, it is the silent treatment. But it goes beyond just not talking. It is a complete shutdown of engagement.
The person stops responding. They may walk away while you are speaking. They may ignore your messages, emails, or calls. They may look through you as if you are invisible. They may refuse to acknowledge your presence at all.
Stonewalling is not someone taking a moment to collect themselves before responding. It is not pausing to avoid saying something hurtful. Those are healthy strategies…
