Many people enter our lives for different reasons. Some become lifelong blessings, while others come only to take advantage of our kindness, generosity, or trust. The Bible teaches believers to love others, forgive freely, and show compassion, but it also teaches wisdom, discernment, and healthy boundaries. Loving people does not mean allowing yourself to be continually used or abused.

Be Careful, Some People Come Into Your Life to Use You and Abuse You

1. Not Everyone Who Comes Close to You Has Good Intentions

Jesus Himself warned that not everyone who appears friendly is trustworthy.

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” — Matthew 7:15

A wolf does not announce itself. It disguises itself to gain access. Likewise, some people pretend to care, love, or support you while secretly seeking personal gain. They may want your money, your influence, your kindness, your time, or your emotional strength.

Signs

They only contact you when they need something.

They disappear when you need help.

They flatter you to gain your trust.

They manipulate your emotions to get what they want.

Jesus tells believers to be spiritually alert rather than naïve.

2. Some People Exploit Kindness

A compassionate heart is a gift from God, but it should be guided by wisdom.

“Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” — Matthew 10:16

God never commands His children to become victims of manipulation. Wisdom helps us know when generosity is genuine and when someone is exploiting our kindness.

Kindness without discernment can lead to emotional, financial, and spiritual exhaustion.

3. Repeated Abuse Is Not God’s Will

Whether the abuse is emotional, verbal, financial, or physical, God values your life and dignity.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23

Guarding your heart means protecting your peace, faith, and emotional well-being. Forgiveness does not require remaining in harmful relationships.

4. Even Jesus Walked Away From Dangerous People

Jesus loved everyone, yet He did not remain where people wanted to harm Him.

“But Jesus withdrew Himself from there.” — Matthew 12:15

There were times when crowds rejected Him, religious leaders plotted against Him, and people attempted to kill Him. Jesus often withdrew because His mission was more important than staying where He was continually attacked.

Sometimes walking away is not weakness—it is wisdom.

5. Do Not Be Deceived by Smooth Words

The Bible warns about people whose words sound loving while their hearts are selfish.

“Their words are smoother than butter, but war is in their hearts.” — Psalm 55:21

Not everyone who speaks kindly has pure motives. Ask God for discernment so you can recognize actions, not just words.

6. Healthy Relationships Are Mutual

The Bible teaches believers to love one another, encourage one another, and carry one another’s burdens.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2

Healthy relationships involve mutual care, respect, honesty, and support. If one person is always giving while the other is always taking, the relationship has become unhealthy.

7. Choose Your Friends Carefully

“Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” — Proverbs 13:20

The people closest to you influence your thinking, your faith, your decisions, and your future. Choose friends who encourage your walk with God instead of draining your strength or leading you into sin.

8. God Gives Discernment to His Children

God promises wisdom to those who ask Him.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God… and it will be given to you.” — James 1:5

Pray before allowing people into your inner circle. The Holy Spirit can reveal warning signs that human eyes often miss.

Biblical Examples

Samson and Delilah (Judges 16): Delilah repeatedly manipulated Samson to discover the secret of his strength. Her hidden motive led to his downfall.

Joseph and His Brothers (Genesis 37): Joseph’s brothers betrayed him out of jealousy and sold him into slavery. God eventually turned their evil into good.

David and Saul (1 Samuel): Saul’s jealousy caused him to pursue David with the intent to kill him. David wisely fled instead of remaining in danger.

Jesus and Judas: Judas stayed close to Jesus while secretly planning to betray Him for money, reminding us that not everyone close to us is loyal.

Conclusion

God calls us to love people, but He also calls us to exercise wisdom. You can forgive without allowing continued abuse. You can pray for someone while setting healthy boundaries. You can love others without permitting them to manipulate, exploit, or mistreat you.

When God reveals someone’s harmful intentions, do not ignore His warning. Trust His guidance, guard your heart, and surround yourself with people who reflect His love, truth, and integrity.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me and protecting me. Fill me with the wisdom and discernment of the Holy Spirit so I may recognize people who seek to use, manipulate, or abuse me. Guard my heart and help me establish healthy, godly boundaries. Remove every relationship that is not Your will for my life, and bring faithful, trustworthy people who encourage my walk with You. Give me the courage to walk away from harmful situations while maintaining a heart of forgiveness. Lead me in truth, protect my family, and let every relationship in my life glorify You. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
