Everyone Needs the Ability to Be Happy

The clearer you are, the luckier you are. The ability to be happy takes effort to learn and understand.

My childhood best friend is the same age as me. When we were kids, we were so close we’d share a dress. Even after growing up, we could still talk about anything. But now, I’m a mom of two, and she’s still single.

This year, her social media posts often talk about vegetarianism, Buddhism, and “cultivating oneself.” Her mom is a bit worried and asked me to chat with her more often.

Auntie didn’t say exactly what she wanted me to talk about, but I knew what she was worried about. My friend is almost forty, unmarried, and childless. She’s afraid her daughter might have some psychological issues. She can’t push her to get married anymore, so she can only advise her not to become a devout Buddhist. That’s a whole other story.

I told Auntie not to worry too much. My friend has her own plans. She’s so smart; how could she be defeated by reality? She loves drinking and eating meat. She’s not exactly about to achieve spiritual purity. Besides, she’s wealthy, has plenty of free time, and is intelligent. Living alone could be a good life…
