If you love something, you let it date someone else.
Dear John,
I’m super bummed to tell you that the universe needs us to break up. It’s not you, you’re great. And it’s not me, I’m great too. It’s a magnetic force beyond the horizon, and the siren song, it summons me. Specifically, to break up with you.
The energy that held us in each other’s orbit has loosened and now that gravity pulls me elsewhere. In the night, the stars spoke. Not audibly, but in the way that stars do, with vibes. Mercury has moved out of retrograde. I have been cosmically unshackled, and therefore, need to unshackle from you.
Staying together would disrespect astrology, which I take seriously in the same way one takes physics seriously, by not asking too many questions.
The Auriga constellation has materialized overhead. Auriga, the charioteer, drives her chariot across the sky heralding freedom, travel, and adventure. The skies are telling me to hit the road. Where to, I don’t know. Maybe Bora Bora? I’m going to check there. Don’t follow me.
I knew the end of our story was written when you bought me those limp irises from the gas station. Irises, the blossoms of melancholy and contemplation. In ancient Greece, the goddess Iris delivered messages from the gods by way of the rainbow. I guess now the gods are franchising gas stations. They are speaking to me. They want us to be apart.
But — bright side — along with sadness, Iris brings hope. You know what comes after the rain? A rainbow, and there’s one waiting on the other side of your tears.

While I was meditating with my crystals today, the howlite slipped from my fingers. The earth tugged the stone from my fingers so that I would know that our connection too, is slipping. As we all know, howlite is the stone of surrender and letting go of attachments. So I am letting go of your attachment to me.
Because if you love something, you let it date someone else.
I slipped an opal into the pocket of your basketball shorts, to help with the conscious uncoupling process. Hold it in your hand until it warms and turn it three times, and when the memories of me fade, drop it in water, like that lady at the end of Titanic.
Also I left a carnelian on your nightstand, for vitality, confidence and sexuality, to help with that thing you totally don’t need to worry about.
I wish I could stay, but the zephyr, it calls. My tarot deck was by the window and the wind flipped the top card onto the table: the Knight of Cups. He wants me to follow my intuition, to be inspired, to be moved.
Away from you.
The Knight commands me. I don’t know who he is. Maybe he’s the spirit of adventure. Maybe he’s the shadow of my future lover. Maybe he’s Pablo, my taekwondo instructor, who I it turns out I have a pretty good connection with.
Best of luck. I send light and love in your direction.
Rent’s due Monday.
