Never Try to Prove Yourself in a Toxic Environment!
Many people feel stuck and drained because they keep trying to reason with others after being treated unfairly.
For instance, if you have a disagreement with your partner in a close relationship, you might want to communicate openly. But then you find your partner either shuts down or twists things around to blame you. This makes you angrier and angrier, until others see you as an unstable, crazy person.
Or, maybe you’re being excluded at work. You think that if you just clear up any misunderstandings, you can all get along. But no matter how sincerely you talk to them, their opinion of you doesn’t change one bit. You end up feeling more wronged and might even start to doubt if you’re really that unlikable.
But the problem isn’t with you.
The whole point of “persuading with reason” is that the other person has to be able to understand reason. The people you can’t communicate with, no matter how hard you try, are fundamentally on a different wavelength. For you, they’re actually toxic people. All the hurt and frustration you feel in these relationships are signs that you’re in a toxic environment.
