When you start seeing someone new, you may wonder what the future holds for the two of you. Is this just a fling, or does it have the potential to be something more serious? When it comes to predicting the next phase of your romance, looking to the stars may provide some guidance. Oftentimes, astrology is used to help us understand more about ourselves and how we see and interact with the world. However, the zodiac can also be a useful tool in determining whether or not you and a potential partner are compatible.

Astrology is about much more than just your sun sign. “We have all the planets, all the signs in our birth charts, and the way they are configured are what makes us uniquely us,” says Suzie Kerr Wright, an expert astrologer. “Our sun sign is just the tip of the iceberg. We tend to gravitate to one sign or another, or avoid some because we just don’t understand them.” However, even though this may be the case, Wright cautions against closing yourself off to a certain sign.

If it turns out that, on paper (or in the stars), your partnership might not be the best, don’t worry. Many couples labeled incompatible due to their astrological signs are still successful. Wright has experience with this herself: “My husband and I are a perfect example of how a ‘bad’ combination can work,” she says. “He’s a Leo, I’m a Scorpio.” While astrologically, the pair may be a less-than-optimal duo, their marriage works. Why? “Everything else in our charts, our Venus, Mars, moon, and Mercury are all in perfect harmony with each other,” she says. For that reason, Wright suggests looking at this information as merely a guideline. Know that there’s so much more to understand and uncover beyond someone’s sun sign.

The Least Compatible Signs for an Aries (March 21–April 20)

If you’re an Aries, avoid getting involved with a Pisces or Cancer. The former tends to be extremely sensitive, making the abrupt nature of an Aries a challenge for them. Similarly, Cancers are often offended by an Aries’s straightforward manner. While they may appreciate the honesty at first, they’ll later come to resent it. Cancers and Pisceans may also be attracted to the decisiveness of an Aries when they initially meet. However, over time, this tendency will cause them to become frustrated or bored with the relationship. Their interests may also diverge; while an Aries wants to be constantly on the go, a Cancer is content staying at home.

If you’re a Taurus, a Leo may be a difficult match for you. Leos need a lot of attention and compliments—something that Tauruses can’t often give them.
