Meghan Markle’s Latest Wedding Ring Stack Faux Pas

Meghan Markle has been known to change up her wedding ring stack, subbing in anniversary bands for her famous three-stone engagement ring from Prince Harry and swapping the order of her jewelry, since her marriage in 2018. Earlier this week, on May 14, 2025, a new photo was released on the Instagram page for Meghan’s Netflix show, As Ever, and it put her wedding ring stack on full display. The most noticeable detail? That the order of her rings was no longer in keeping with tradition.

Typically, after a woman is married, the wedding band is worn first (because this is the ring closest to the heart), followed by the engagement ring; any other rings, like anniversary bands or those commemorating the birth of child, would be worn on the outside. If a woman has multiple wedding bands—say, she received a simple gold band during the ceremony and an infinity band on the big day, the gold band would be worn first, then the engagement ring, and the diamond band would go on last.

In Meghan’s case, per the latest photo, she’s now wearing her engagement ring first, followed by the infinity band, and has placed her wedding ring on the outside. It’s unclear why she’s chosen this new order—it could be as simple as personal preference, that her wedding band is the tightest-fitting ring, so she’s wearing it on the outside to keep the others in place, or that she simply slipped up and put her rings on in the wrong order on this particular day. Regardless of the reason why she’s selected this order, some would consider this to be a wedding jewelry faux pas.

Our take? In today’s modern world, couples should feel empowered to keep and dismiss the traditions that don’t serve them. Ultimately, it’s up to the wearer to decide how they want to stack their rings, and if breaking with tradition is your preference (either symbolically or out of personal taste), you can certainly do that. If you do want to follow tradition, though, it’s best to always put your wedding band on first. And if you’re not wearing your engagement ring at all, or else putting that sparkler on a different fingers, as some married women choose to do? You should still put the wedding band on the fourth finger of your left hand first, with any additional rings following.

Meghan has never shied away from wearing her rings exactly how she wants. What’s more, she’s changed her engagement ring itself at least four times since she received in 2017. In January of this year, the actress made what appears to be the most dramatic adjustment to the bauble, trading the cushion-cut center diamond for one that appears to be more rectangular.
