Allowing us to feel
The majority of streaming serials are a bit meh. They are fine if you’re in the mood for a brainless viewing experience, but after a few, they become so formulaic. I’m in the UK, and the American offerings feel too polished; that is, the characters are too polished and perfect for my scruffy English brain to take seriously.
Then every so often comes a masterpiece like Breaking Bad, The Americans, Better Call Saul, or Ozark.
So I was very chuffed (means stoked or pumped in the US) when DTF St. Louis appeared on our screens. It’s not easy to understand why it’s so fabulous compared to other offerings. After a long think, I came to the conclusion that it made me feel very warm and happy. The feelings that usually stay beneath our surface are pulled right out in the open by these characters. This is because Floyd shows them how. He is at once too good for this world and also what this world needs more than anything else. He is the polar opposite of the feelings that are swilling around in our world today. Those feelings of intolerance, impatience, envy, and dissatisfaction, to name just a few.
Obviously, the writing was top-notch, the casting inspired, and the production on point. But what will always stand out for me is that it vindicated my desire to be myself and just be nice.
