Bride’s Grandma Offers to Pay for Wedding But Isn’t Getting an Invite

If there are two elements of a wedding that are universally known to cause the most stress for couples, they’re undoubtably figuring out the budget and nailing down the guest list. For one bride, those two components melded together in one incredibly uncomfortable experience when her grandmother, who she never intended to invite to the wedding, offered to help fund the event. In a post on Reddit’s “Wedding Drama” thread, which she titled “What’s the best way to say ‘I cannot accept the money you want to give me for my wedding because you’re not invited,'” the bride-to-be outlined the difficult relationship she has with her grandmother and how she offered to pay for her wedding dress and part of the celebration itself.

“I don’t like my grandma. She’s passive aggressive, impulsive, a narcissist, and has been a pain in the ass to the whole family since before I was born,” the bride notes. “She hasn’t seen any of her grandkids get married, either because she wasn’t invited or because she chose not to go because she ‘wasn’t very close’ to them. I’m her last grandkid to get married and a bride so she’s really trying to cling to me. I have many reasons why I don’t like her and don’t want her at my wedding.” She adds that her fiancé and parents support her decision to exclude the grandmother from the guest list.

All that being said, her grandmother has offered to pay for the bride’s wedding dress (and wants to be there when she picks it out) and help cover some of the ceremony and reception costs (but would like to spend the wedding morning with the bride). “I don’t want any of this. Just thinking about it sucks all the joy out of those experiences for me,” she wrote. “I can see it in my mind how it would all pan out. She’d be constantly trampling over my boundaries, putting a camera in my face when it’s inappropriate, and if I complained she’d call me a ‘premadonna’ or patronize me by saying something like ‘oooOh sHe wAnTs hEr pRiVaCy.'”

The bride goes on to note that she knows she needs to have a conversation with her grandmother, but she’s not sure how to broach the subject in a way that will be understood or accepted. “I need to tell her she is not invited and I don’t want her money,” she explains. “She is never direct with me when it comes to conflict. If I do something she doesn’t like, her solution is to go to my dad and I guess expect him to like ground me or something… She still treats me like a child, so I have no idea how a very adult conversation will go.”

She also notes that there’s no world in which she’d take the money. “I get that some people would just take the money and put up with her, but she literally ruins everyday that I see her so I just don’t want her there and her money is just an excuse to control me,” the bride explains.

The feedback from Reddit’s community? Be clear and direct, and don’t back down. “Be direct. You can say, ‘I appreciate your offer but my fiancé and I are handling everything ourselves,'” one user wrote. “She will continue to push, and you must continue to say, ‘Thank you, but no.'” Another noted that she could consider bringing in her parents for backup, letting them deal with the fallout. “I would tell her directly that she cannot buy herself a spot on the guest list,” one respondent said. “It sounds like your parents are on board with not inviting her. Let them know when you’re gonna break it to grandma, and then text her firmly and don’t take any s—. Hopefully your parents will back you up. I wouldn’t invite her to anything in the future either tbh.”
