Augustine Was Never Asking to Be Chosen

There are stories that people remember because they lasted.

And then there are stories like Augustine’s—remembered because they never really had the chance to begin.

Taylor Swift’s August has always felt less like a song and more like a confession. Every time I hear it, I don’t hear a villain. I hear a girl who loved with everything she had, even when the ending had already been written for her.

Augustine fell in love during a season that was always meant to pass.

She knew there was another girl. She knew his heart had never truly been empty. Yet she still reached for the moments he offered, collecting them like seashells before the tide could wash them away. She accepted borrowed time because, for a little while, borrowed love still felt like love.

Maybe that’s why she breaks my heart.

Not because she loved the wrong person.

But because all she ever wanted was to be loved the right way.

There’s something painfully human about convincing yourself that someone’s temporary attention might eventually become permanence. You memorize the little things. You replay conversations until they sound like promises. You mistake possibility for certainty because hope is louder than reality.

You tell yourself, maybe this time.

But “maybe” has broken more hearts than “no” ever could.

I think that’s why Augustine feels so personal to me.

I’ve known what it’s like to hold onto moments that were never mine to keep. To love quietly. To believe that if I gave enough, stayed long enough, or loved deeply enough, someone would finally choose me.

They didn’t.

And perhaps the hardest lesson wasn’t losing them.

It was realizing I had been fighting for a place in someone’s life that was never empty enough for me.

Augustine wasn’t asking to steal anyone.

She was asking for something genuine.

She wanted a love that didn’t arrive with conditions. A love that didn’t disappear when summer ended. A love that didn’t require her to settle for almost.

Isn’t that what most of us want?

Not grand gestures.

Not perfect people.

Just someone whose heart doesn’t hesitate when it comes to us.

For a long time, I felt sorry for Augustine because she walked away empty-handed.

Now I admire her.

Because loving—even when it hurts—is proof that your heart still knows how to hope.

And someday, that hope deserves someone who doesn’t make you feel like a secret.

Maybe that’s the real ending to August.

Not that she lost him.

But that one day she’ll stop chasing people who only love her in passing, and she’ll find someone who chooses her in every season—not just in August.

Until then, I’ll keep listening to the song.

Not because it reminds me of what I lost.

But because it reminds me that I should never confuse temporary affection with the love I’ve been searching for all along.
