We were strangers

not even the kind that pass each other in hallways
just… two people
existing in completely different worlds, and then somehow
we found each other

like it wasn’t supposed to happen
but it did anyway.

it started so simply

a conversation that lasted longer than expected
a reply that came faster than it should’ve
a comfort that didn’t make sense yet felt… right

and I remember thinking, this is nothing but it didn’t feel like nothing, became a habit before I could even notice it.

a part of my day
a name I looked for
a notification I waited on without admitting it

and it scared me
just a little

because things that come this easy
don’t usually stay, and I’ve learned that the hard way

there was no label

no “what are we”
no promises
no plans just… something

something in the way we talked
in the way they understood things I didn’t explain
in the way silence never felt awkward

like we skipped steps
like we landed somewhere in the middle
without knowing how we got there and maybe that’s why I keep going back to it

trying to figure it out

was it almost love? or just two lonely people
finding comfort in each other at the right time

was it real? or did it only feel real
because I wanted it to be

because I’ve felt things before

but this was different

quieter
softer
less loud than what people call love but deeper than what they call nothing

and I don’t know what that means, maybe it was just timing or maybe it was the kind of connection that exists without needing a place in real life.

something that lives in moments
in late conversations
in unsaid things

but then why did it feel like it mattered

why did it feel like losing something
when nothing was ever mine

why do I still think about it
like there was something to hold onto

maybe it was nothing

Or maybe

it was something real
that neither of us knew how to keep

I don’t know which one scares me more, that it meant everything for a moment or that it might not have meant anything at all.
