Dr. Nicholas Jenner

Why do people remain in relationships that repeatedly hurt them? This article uses an IFS perspective to explore the protective parts behind codependent attachment, including fear, guilt, hope and responsibility. It explains why leaving can feel dangerous and how compassionate self-leadership can eventually support clearer, healthier and more authentic choices.

“Why don’t you just leave?”

It’s one of the most common questions people ask themselves when they remain in painful and toxic relationships. Indeed, it’s the question most of their friends and family would also ask. From the outside, it may be obvious as to why they should leave. The same patterns and cycles, the promises broken and little sign of change. People might get frustrated and accuse the person of not facing reality. Yet, leaving is rarely as simple as recognising that a relationship is harmful.

Someone may understand that something is very wrong, have all the awareness in the world and still be unable to act. One part may be exhausted and desperate for the life that freedom might bring, while another remains frightened, hopeful or burdened by shame and guilt. This internal guilt is often at the heart of codependency. Parts work, also known as IFS, offers a useful way of understanding this. Rather than viewing the person as weak or irrational, it asks: what is the part that cannot leave trying to protect?
