Why the Loudest Room Isn’t Always the Strongest One?

Let’s get one thing straight: “girl power” was never about glitter, slogans on tote bags, or a perfectly choreographed empowerment montage set to a pop anthem. Somewhere between the hashtags and the merch, we let the phrase get watered down into something you could buy at a mall kiosk. But the real thing? It’s quieter, messier, and a whole lot more interesting than that.

I want to talk about the kind of power that doesn’t announce itself.

The Myth of the “Strong Woman”

We’ve built this exhausting archetype of what a “strong woman” is supposed to look like. She doesn’t cry in meetings. She never asks for help. She’s climbing, hustling, “girlbossing” through burnout with a smile because heaven forbid she look tired.

Here’s the problem: that’s not strength. That’s performance. And performance is expensive ; it costs sleep, honesty, and eventually, yourself.

Real power looks like the woman who says “I don’t know, can you explain that again?” in a room full of people who’ll judge her for it. It looks like setting a boundary and living with the discomfort of someone being upset about it. It looks like choosing rest when productivity culture is screaming at you to do more, be more, prove more.

Strength isn’t the absence of softness. Sometimes it’s softness that refused to disappear no matter how many times the world tried to harden it.

Empowerment Isn’t a Solo Sport

There’s this individualistic spin on empowerment now, as if a woman’s worth is measured purely by how self-sufficient she can be, how little she needs from anyone. Independence is great. It’s not the whole story.

The women who’ve actually shaped my life weren’t lone wolves. They were the ones who showed up. The colleague who quietly vouched for you in a room you weren’t in. The friend who sent a voice note at 1 a.m. because she knew something was off. The stranger in the group chat who said “same” and made you feel a little less alone in whatever you were carrying.

Power multiplies when it’s shared. A woman lifting another woman isn’t charity, it’s strategy. It’s how ceilings actually get broken, not by one person punching through alone, but by a whole lot of hands pushing at the same crack.

The Quiet Kind of Power Nobody Claps For

Not every act of empowerment gets a spotlight. Most of it doesn’t.

It’s the woman who went back to finish her degree at 30 while everyone assumed she’d already peaked. It’s the one who left a comfortable but soul-draining job because “stable” isn’t the same as “right.” It’s the one who said no to a wedding she didn’t want, a career path she didn’t choose, a version of herself she outgrew years ago.

Nobody’s writing a headline about that. There’s no confetti. Just her, deciding again and again, on ordinary days that she gets to author her own life. That’s the part of “woman power” nobody puts on a t-shirt, but it’s the part that actually holds everything else up.

So What Does “Empowered” Even Mean?

Honestly? I think it just means being unapologetically in progress.

You don’t have to have it figured out. You don’t have to be inspirational on command. You’re allowed to be ambitious and unsure. Soft and sharp. Someone who cried in the bathroom this morning and still showed up to lead the meeting this afternoon. Both things can be true. Both things are strength.

Empowerment isn’t a finish line you cross once and get to keep forever. It’s a practice. Some days it looks like showing up loud. Other days it looks like simply not giving up on yourself when it would’ve been easier to.

To Every Woman Reading This

You don’t need permission to take up space, but if you’re waiting for it anyway consider this it.

Be the kind of powerful that doesn’t need an audience. Speak up when it’s hard. Rest when you need to, without the guilt trip. Champion the woman next to you instead of quietly competing with her. And when nobody’s clapping, keep going anyway because the truest kind of power was never about the applause. It was about becoming, on your own terms, whoever you were always meant to be.

That’s the power. That’s the empowerment. Everything else is just noise.
