Award-nominated Zimbabwean artist, producer, and Angelou’s Jew Records founder Kiid Angel is preparing to release one of his most personal projects yet—Sunsets & Heartbreaks. More than just an EP, it’s a conversation about men’s mental health, emotional healing, heartbreak, faith, and hope.
With a sound that blends Afrobeat, Amapiano, Hip-Hop, Trap, and R&B, Kiid Angel invites listeners into the emotional world many men quietly live in but rarely speak about. In this exclusive interview, he shares the inspiration behind the project, the stories that shaped it, and the message he hopes will resonate far beyond the music.
“When the Sun Sets, the Mask Comes Off”
The title Sunsets & Heartbreaks symbolizes the quiet moments when men are left alone with their thoughts.
«”Throughout the day, many men wear masks. We’re expected to be providers, protectors, and to always have everything under control. But when the sun sets, the performance ends. The mask comes off, and that’s when the real emotions surface.”»
Kiid Angel explains that the “heartbreaks” in the project extend far beyond romantic relationships. They represent silent struggles, emotional burdens, rejection, anxiety, depression, and the expectations placed on men by society.
«”We’ve grown up hearing things like ‘Man up,’ ‘Men don’t cry,’ and ‘Showing emotion is weakness.’ Those beliefs have caused many men to suffer in silence.”»
Why Men’s Mental Health Matters
The idea for the EP began with one question:
«”If men are expected to be providers, then who provides for them?”»
That question became the foundation of Sunsets & Heartbreaks.
Kiid Angel says he wants the project to remind people that men also deserve love, understanding, support, and safe spaces to express themselves without fear of judgment.
«”Speaking up doesn’t make a man weak. It takes courage to be honest about what you’re carrying.”»
Letting the Music Tell the Story
Rather than revealing every personal experience behind the project, Kiid Angel believes the songs should speak for themselves.
«”Every track carries pieces of my experiences, emotions, and observations. I want listeners to discover those moments through the music.”»
Finding His Signature Sound
Although previous releases explored different musical directions, Kiid Angel describes Sunsets & Heartbreaks as the project where he truly discovered his artistic identity.
«”This is my signature sound. It’s more mature, more emotional, and more authentic than anything I’ve released before.”»
Each genre contributes something unique:
– Afrobeat brings hope and warmth.
– R&B expresses vulnerability.
– Hip-Hop delivers honest storytelling.
– Trap captures emotional intensity.
– Amapiano creates atmosphere and feeling.
Instead of forcing genres together, every song naturally found the sound that best served its message.
The Story Behind “Rejects”
One of the EP’s most emotional songs is Rejects.
Kiid Angel wrote the song shortly after leaving what was supposed to be relationship counseling with a pastor.
«”I walked away feeling unheard. I thought another man would understand what I was going through, but instead I felt dismissed.”»
On the journey home, he wrote the lyrics, produced the instrumental, and recorded the emotions exactly as they came.
«”I accepted everything with a smile, but inside I was hurting.”»
He believes many listeners will connect with the feeling of rejection and being misunderstood.
A Prayer Through Music
Another deeply personal record is Retsepile Wena Fela.
Rather than simply being a song, Kiid Angel describes it as a prayer from someone who has reached their breaking point and is asking God whether He truly understands their pain.
Growing up serving in church and dedicating much of his childhood to ministry and school shaped the emotion behind the record.
«”Sometimes life becomes so difficult that you ask God if He remembers every sacrifice you made.”»
That honesty made it one of the hardest songs to write.
Balancing Art and Purpose
As both artist and producer, Kiid Angel says commercial success was never allowed to replace the project’s purpose.
«”The message always came first. I wanted people to enjoy the music, but never at the expense of honesty.”»
The EP combines memorable production with deeply personal storytelling, creating music that’s both emotionally powerful and accessible.
Eighteen Months of Creating Something Real
Sunsets & Heartbreaks took one year and six months to complete.
Every song went through multiple revisions until it genuinely reflected the emotions and experiences behind it.
The project also introduces talented upcoming artists, giving new voices an opportunity to shine alongside Kiid Angel.
Building More Than a Record Label
Beyond his own music career, Kiid Angel has a bigger vision for Angelou’s Jew Records.
He hopes the label becomes a home for emerging artists by providing education, mentorship, opportunities, and a platform to help them build sustainable careers.
«”If we invest in upcoming artists today, we help build a stronger music industry tomorrow.”»
August Baby Fest Returns
Fans will get an early taste of Sunsets & Heartbreaks during August Baby Fest – 4th Edition.
Hosted by Kiid Angel alongside Thriller Entertainment Company and DJ Offswag, the annual festival celebrates upcoming talent while promoting unity, creativity, and men’s mental health awareness.
Music videos, live performances, interviews, and exclusive previews are all part of the upcoming rollout.
What Success Really Means
For Kiid Angel, success isn’t measured by charts, streams, or awards alone.
«”If one song helps someone seek healing, speak up, or realize they’re not alone, then this project has already succeeded.”»
A Message to Every Listener
As the release of Sunsets & Heartbreaks approaches, Kiid Angel leaves one final message:
«”To every man reading this, you don’t have to fight every battle alone. Strength isn’t pretending you’re okay. Strength is having the courage to be honest when you’re not.”»
“And to everyone else—be kind. You never know what someone is carrying behind their smile.”
With Sunsets & Heartbreaks, Kiid Angel isn’t just releasing an EP. He’s starting a conversation many people have been waiting to hear—one about healing, vulnerability, hope, and reminding men that their lives, emotions, and mental health matter.
