POETRY VS REALITY: Love is Beautiful, But Not at Every Cost

Introduction

I recently came across a quote , “how empty of me to be so full of you” , and while it stopped me in my tracks with its beauty, it also made me pause. Because as romantic as it sounds, it describes something that is quietly dangerous.

Yes, loving someone deeply is courageous. It takes strength to open yourself up fully to another person. But there is a version of love that crosses a line where loving someone else means slowly erasing yourself. And that version? It is only beautiful in poetry.

When Love Becomes Losing Yourself

Think about what happens when you fall deeply for someone. Suddenly, everything around you becomes a reminder of them:

A flower and you think of their delicacy.

A stranger’s laugh and you scan the room, hoping.

A song, a place, a small habit – all roads lead back to them.

This is the tenderness of love, and it is real. But tenderness can quietly tip into something else. When you think of someone more than you think of yourself, you begin to forget who you are.

You forget what you love. You forget that you deserve your own time, your own attention, your own care.

You stop being the main character of your own life and become a supporting role in theirs waiting for their calls, their texts, their approval to feel okay.

It shows up in small ways at first. You seek their validation instead of trusting yourself. You neglect what you need.

You feel hollow and restless without their presence, as though your own company is no longer enough.

Your thoughts become so full of them that there is no room left for your own voice.

That is not love sustaining you. That is love consuming you.

The Aftermath

And then, if they leave, the crash becomes harder than it should be -because you had built your entire sense of self around them.

You find yourself asking:

What did I do wrong?

Why did they leave?

Was I not enough?

These questions feel like they are about them, but they are really about you , specifically, how little of yourself you held onto while you were loving them. When someone leaves and takes your sense of purpose with them, it is a sign that somewhere along the way, you stopped investing in yourself.

And now you are left trying to figure out who you are, what you enjoy, what you even want! , because for so long, your answers revolved entirely around someone else.

Finding Your Way Back

If this is where you are right now, know this: love is never wasted. Even love that hurt you taught you something. You will find your way back to yourself , but the journey starts with you, not with finding someone new.

Here is where to begin:

Write it out. Not in your notes app but on paper. Write everything you feel without editing yourself, without worrying who will read it. Let it be messy and honest. You can burn the pages after if you want. The point is to clear space in your mind.

Talk to someone. A therapist is ideal, but if that is not accessible right now, a trusted friend or family member who will listen without judgment is a powerful start!

You do not have to carry this alone.

Be patient with yourself. Healing is not linear. Some days will feel like progress; others will feel like you are back at the beginning. Both are part of the process.

A Note If You Haven’t Been Here Yet

If you have not experienced this kind of love yet, this is not a warning to never love deeply.

Love is one of the most profound things a human being can feel. But love that is healthy begins with knowing yourself first.

You can love someone fiercely and still remain whole. You can be devoted without disappearing. The difference lies in never forgetting that the first drops of care and attention should always be poured into yourself , because you cannot genuinely give from an empty place.

A Grounding Practice (To Do Now)

Before you scroll away, try this. It takes less than two minutes.

Look around you and notice:

2–5 things you can see

2–5 things you can hear

2–5 things you can smell

2–5 things you can taste

2–5 things you can feel physically

This is a grounding technique used to gently bring your mind back to the present moment – to your body, your surroundings, your experience. It is a small act of returning to yourself.

And returning to yourself is where everything begins.

Written with honesty and care , for anyone who has ever loved at the expense of themselves.
