Fate, Physics, and the Invisible Ties That Bind Us
Red String Theory, or the Red Thread of Fate, is a cherished cultural tradition based on East Asian mythology, primarily Chinese and Japanese. Rather than being scientific theories of physics, the Red String is laden with emotional, philosophical, and symbolic significance. The belief states that those destined to be together are tied by an invisible red string around their little fingers; some say around their ankles. The string can stretch, sometimes get tangled, but never break, so that the destined persons will meet in this world or in another, no matter what stands against them.
•Origin and Culture
The concept is most widely believed to have its origin in old Chinese folklore with a corresponding belief existing in Japan. In Chinese lore, it is said to be tied by the moon deity, Yue Lao, or the Old Man Under the Moon, who oversees marriages and bonds between souls. The legend is that whenever two persons are destined to be together, Yue Lao ties a red thread around their ankles at birth; whatever the circumstances of their lives, these two persons will come into contact with each other and enter a shared destiny.
