What I learned from my husband’s performance review about recognition, worth, and showing up for the people we love
Last night, I found a piece of paper folded up on our bed. At first glance, it looked like it might be homework for one of the kids. But then I decided to open it up…
It was my husband’s annual performance review. And even though his rating was “outstanding” and management went on and on about how amazing he is even when they are short staffed, the goal for next year was “do even more”.
The problem is, they aren’t willing to promote him or pay him his worth.
And isn’t that the truth for many of us? Not just at work, but in life.
Our value goes far beyond a performance review or a set of likes on a post… but we seldom get the benefits or even the recognition that we deserve.
How can we start to make a change for others?
For me, I’m going to start by telling my husband even more just how grateful I am for him and how much I appreciate him. I’m going to celebrate him and reward him in little ways: back rubs, his favorite meals, more golf outings…
Because at the end of the day, my husband is “outstanding” both at work and at home, and even if I can’t give him a promotion or more money, I can surely reward him and make his life better at home.
