I saw my ex-wife for the first time during college. She was among the prettiest girls in college — quite beautiful, self-assured, and had people around her. I liked her when I first saw her, but in some way she was as if she didn’t belong to the world where I belonged. We had not been in school together at the same time in the same grade, but we also had an opportunity to talk by doing homework at home and other things which were not at school. We both got over this after a while and were committed to one another. We started marrying each other soon after one of us graduated. It just felt like it was meant to be, like it was supposed to be.”
We both pursued very competitive, male-dominated fields. I found my groove within a matter of seconds and just kept going, much to my surprise as well as anybody else’s. My ex-wife wasn’t quite so fortunate. She was running in circles and changing careers back and forth repeatedly, fighting subliminal biases and self-esteem problems that only accumulated year by year.
