We like to believe love can conquer anything — but maybe boundaries are what make love real.

We grow up on fairytales that promise “forever.” We’re told that real love doesn’t fade, doesn’t waver, and certainly doesn’t come with conditions. Parents, partners, even friends — we hold them to this impossible ideal of unconditional love. But if we strip away the fantasy, does such a thing truly exist? Or is it one of humanity’s most beautiful lies?

The Comfort of the Concept

The idea of unconditional love gives us a sense of safety — the belief that no matter how deeply we fail or how far we fall, someone will still be there waiting with open arms. It’s the promise of home in an unpredictable world.

For children, that belief often begins with their parents. “I’ll love you no matter what,” they say, and in the early years, it feels true. But as we grow older, we learn that love — even from those who raised us — can be tested. By addiction. By betrayal. By pain too heavy for even love to hold.

The same applies to romantic love. We want it to mean, you’ll love me through anything. But what happens when “anything” becomes abuse, neglect, or self-destruction? Love without…
